Megabats really impressed me with their debut in/out. It was a sweet blend of fuzzy Fuck Buttons beats with spacey Oneohtrix Point Never bloop drone. For some reason I never reviewed it, but they have a new one called Goes To A Lemon released by the same label, Debacle, and I'm not letting them slip by again.

The jams they're making are a bit derivative (wtf isn't), but they still resonate with me and I find myself listening to them way more than some of the more original stuff I come across. Goes To A Lemon is full of high quality tunes perfect for a late night joyride, a doze underneath glow-in-the-dark stars, or a hardcore blissed out neon basement dance party. Megabats pump out the deep, dark, euphoric fuzz beats with pink stars blazin past at lightspeed. Clearly this is right where it's fucking at. Stream it for free, buy it on the cheap, download it for even cheaper, all at Bandcamp.

I'm not sure it's possible to be more self aware than this dude. But at least he's making some good tunes instead of writing a snarky blog full of hipster loathing. "I Lost My Corpse Paint" is nearly 9 minutes of synthy electro pop. Super heavy on the chiptunes (authentic or not is your guess), with a hearty mix of crisp beats & gritty blown out melodies. Sweet enough to put on your next dance party mix although I'll leave it up to you if you ever want to reveal to your friends that you enjoy music from a guy called Hipster Youth.

It looks like the 50 limited hand numbered CD-Rs are sold out. That means you should stream & download the whole album, Teenage Elders, at Bandcamp, highly recommended for song titles such as "Crying Outside Clubs," "Pop Song For Those With Short Attention Spans," and the ridiculously catchy "Super Fun Hipster Suicide Party."

I slept 11 hours and I'm still fuckin exhausted so what I need are some chill beats to ease me in and then wake me the fuck up. Lucky for me (and most likely you too because, after all, it is Monday) Coralcola has finally released his Egggirl EP, complete with 2 new jams and 6 title track remixes from Boston(ish)'s worthiest and most capable remixin dudes.

When "Egggirl" came out last July, I was listening to that blissy techno shit every day and was really looking forward to the upcoming EP, supposedly coming in the fall. Clearly that didn't happen. But you know what? It was totally worth the wait and for 2 reasons. 1: IT'S FREE so any argument is invalid. 2: It's just that fuckin slick.

Check out who lent their skills in making "Egggirl" all it can be: Die Young, Nooka Jones, Kat Fyte...? Yeah. This is it. They all take their own original style, warping the song into something entirely different, making listening to "Egggirl" 7 times 100% enjoyable.

What you need to do is go download this EP for free and then you'll be the head master of Party Town USA all week at work.

Cop Magnet

I had an especially unkind awakening today and, unable to get back to sleep, I'm still groggy and in a post-grumpy haze, feeling a bit like that Asian dude right there. I'm pretty sure the only thing that's gonna get my blood flowin is some Cop Magnet.

One dude from Boston dedicated to his dance jams, Cop Magnet sounds like he's having the best fucking time all alone in his bedroom. Throws on some strobes, kicks the fog machine into gear, and just has his own private rave. None of the songs are too straightforward, though (not that I would know what straightforward house or techno or whatevertehfuck it is sounds like), but there's a strong weirdo fuck-it-all vibe I get from Cop Magnet.

As long as you're not uptight about your dance tunes, Cop Magnet should give you a little thrill. And, at the very least, it's a solid replacement for caffeine.

Oh, and keep an eye out for a Cop Magnet tape coming out on Breakfast Of Champs. Should be out soon.

I'm currently in the process of getting my shit together to apply for grad school, consolidating old student loans, and trying to buy a condo. Even if I was just doing the home buying thing, it would be too much, but no, I just gotta go balls to the wall. Posting might be a bit slow for a little while until shit gets straightened out and I've bought a place and moved and all that fuckin stuff.

Gianni Rossi - Gutterballs Soundtrack (Permanent Vacation, 2009)

I think this marks the first time I ever listened to a soundtrack before I saw the movie, but when I found out about this, I just had to. I mean, Gutterballs sounded like an awesome enough movie on it's own (simplified: slasher set in a bowling alley) but when I saw that the soundtrack was basically packed with synth disco horror, there was no stopping me.

Gianni Rossi has made a score that will easily be enjoyed without any context in regards to the film. The songs on this are just so fucking cool. The beats are non-stop, the bass grooves are propulsive, and the '80s guitar riffs are so rocking. I haven't heard a soundtrack that sounds this cheesily amazing in forever. Most authentic '70s and '80s horror movies don't even have soundtracks this good.

However, it is still a soundtrack, with the whole variations on a theme sorta thing. So, obviously, if you hate that, then just duck out now. But if you're a fan of anything Goblin/Italo Disco/Horror then you're gonna eat this shit up. Either way, though, just try to forget that this is supposed to be from a movie because it doesn't even matter. I must've listened to this 20 times before I saw Gutterballs. But see the movie, too, because it's fucking ridiculous.

Well, in addition to making sweet summer mixtapes and remixing The Pandas and Universal Studios Florida, he's got an all new dreamy dance jam for you to devour. "Egggirl" is a 10 minute blissful beat filled techno epic that has pretty much been on repeat ever since it arrive in my inbox. It sounds a bit like The Field except maybe not quite as lush. Or Swedish. This will probably end up on a new EP come fall so if you're craving more (which you should be 'cause it's fucking great), thankfully you don't have that long to wait.

Yeah, that pretty much makes everything else going on this week irrelevant.

This is part of the Coup D’etat music series put on by Semata Productions which automatically means it's going to be great. I only know of Jay Sullivan, who does that awesome turntable drone stuff and is part of Ouest with Howard Stelzer and Brendan Murray. But when some of the other bands are described as "Phil Niblock and Johnathan Coleclough crying together in a bar" or "a voice more glorious than Calvin Johnson and Michael Gira combined" then you know this is the real fucking deal.

I'm not totally sure what this is. Here's what the website says. It's the "world premiere of Concert Aria for Obbligato Violin and Robots by computer music pioneer Paul Lansky. Plus Evan Ziporyn's Belle Labs and completely new works by Ensemble Robot and Loud Objects composers for robots and live soldering." Here is what I do know. Loud Objects involves Tristan Perich, the man who made the amazingly genius 1-Bit Music. And there's something to do with robots and soldering. That's all I really need to know. I'm fucking sold. But if $15 is a little too rich for your blood, there's always the Big Bear show at The Middle East Upstairs with Pants Yell that same night for $8. And that could be the best $8 you spend all week.

This is a night of firsts. It's the very first event presented by one of the best blogs in Boston, Enough Cowbell. It's also the first night that both Rockula and Cassette will officially be playing Boston. So go have fun, dance your ass off ('cause Monday's Patriots Day!) and revel in the fact that the $5 is being donated to Cycle Kids, a local non-profit helping kids get their hands on bikes.

Coralcola - 747 EP (self released, 2009)

An "EP" that's 37 minutes long? Check. Released on tape? Check. Local electronic music that's really fucking tight? Check.

Coralcola reign from Worcester, MA, which isn't as cool as Boston but much cooler than Springfield and kinda falls right in the middle of them geographically. How a place like Worcester birthed a tape like the 747 EP I'll never know but I think we're all the better for it.

747 is almost exclusively electronic but each song has it's own style. Coralcola and I must be fucking meant for each other or something because I don't think there are many people that would throw all of these different tunes onto one album. "Ouch" is a straightforward dance number that would make the kids go crazy in the club. But that's followed immediately by "Stag Highway" which is a glitchy ambient IDM piece. "It's Always Sunny In Boston" while obviously not true takes it back to the danciness of "Ouch" although this time they added a bit more techno. Don't worry, that's a good thing. And then they finish things off with "Sleep Is For Dreamers" which, if you couldn't guess, is some wonderful soaring drone.

I give Coralcola mad props for being brave enough for being able to make a varied record like the 747 EP while still keeping it consistent. There's only 100 of these babies out there and they're $7. If you're an analog-aphobe, they come with free MP3s (and a button). But if you're feeling like a cheap bastard (and who isn't these days?) you can download this sweet bitch right here.

In light of the recent "Craziest Video From The '80s" I thought I'd share this video by Futurecop! comprised entirely of clips from all of the best '80s movies. The song is called "Karate Kids" and it's got all of those loveable dancey electro beats that the kids can't seem to get enough of these days. Most of the movie clips are from party scenes and they (aka video creator TNUC) seemed to sync up everyone's dance moves to the song pretty well. Pop quiz, hot shot. Usputuspud - Live In The Shit (The Nafs, 2009)

Last year I jizzed in my pants when I heard Usputuspud's Disco tape. And ever since, I've been jizzing my pants every time I hear it. Now it looks like I'll be jizzing my pants twice as much because Usputuspud's released a new tape.

Live In The Shit was recorded live (presumably in the shit) and it's every bit as good as Disco. It's super lo-fi warbly dance drone. Maybe Live is a bit less dancey than Disco was but I guess that makes sense. It's not like this one was called Groove or anything.

The A side, "Summer Of 83 Really," is heavy on the shimmery drone with a beat only showing up about 7 minutes in. And even then it's not like it's a real dance jam or anything, it just has this dense throbbing that escalates as the music gets thicker and louder. It's fucking awesome. But the B side is even better.

Flip the tape over and you're treated to some sweet harmonicas fading and echoing. After drifting around for a while, a quiet beat sneaks in and before you know it, you're bobbing your head while a simultaneously light and murky drone fills your mind and it grows and grows. You're surrounded by this overflowing, impenetrable beauty and you don't know if you want to start dancing or chill and ride it out. I honestly don't think I could love this any more.

Sometimes you hear some music and you think it is so perfect that it must have been made for you or something. I kind of feel that way about Fuck Buttons, Belong, and most certainly Usputuspud. It's exactly what I want in music and I seriously can't get enough of it. I'd love to have this permanently playing wherever I go.

Video: Telepathe - Devil's Trident (Diamond Vampires Remix)

This video for the Diamond Vampires remix of Telepathe's "Devil's Trident" is soooo cool. Comprised of various footage from the '80s, mostly sci-fi stuff, B movies, and the like, and it complements the music perfectly. All sorts of -scopes that make fancy visuals that I guess are supposed to be what the inside of that dude's brain looks like. And the part at the end that starts around 4:00 with some guy going through the laser portal? I fucking know I've seen that in another video before. If you know what it was, please let me know in the comments. Either way though, I can absolutely guarantee that it's used a hundred million times better in this video.

I know I'm a bit late on this one, but only according to some. I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who've never heard about Weird Tapes. But that's not even why I'm writing about them. I'm doing it because I love them and I love writing about shit that I love.

Guy, girl, both, neither, I don't really have the energy to find out much about Weird Tapes. Yes, I went to their Myspace page and blog, but a 5 second glance didn't yield much information. All I know is they got some super cheesy imagery and super awesome music.

Get Religion is... um... pretty much... it's just disco. Yeah. But, like, new disco. And good disco. Pretty straightforward, fluffy light disco with heavy beats. Kinda spacey, repetitive, minimal, and done just right.

I know everyone's not a fan of this new electro-disco nonsense and I don't blame you. I'm not all on board either. In fact I think Hercules & Love Affair is probably the most overrated band of 2008 (right next to Vampire Weekend). But Weird Tapes have something almost timeless, almost like anti-disco. It's the kind of music that you put on at a party and even if that douchebag no one likes shows up, everyone's still happy and having a great time because Get Religion can do that. It's transcendent disco. And I know you like it.

Fan Death sounds a little bit like The Knife. Thankfully, it's not like they're a Knife rip off or anything. They just have a female singer and do the dark electro thing, except Fan Death is much more focused on the disco.



Human People - Just Like Honey

In case you couldn't guess from the title, this is Human People covering The Jesus & Mary Chain classic. Normally this isn't my kinda thing but you know what? This is actually a really solid cover. I'm not saying it's better than the original or anything. But sometimes certain shoegaze songs need to be vamped up and made into awesome dance jams. Thanks Human People!

Marnie Stern - Steely (from This Is It...)

Marnie Stern and Zach Hill should just get married already. Their music is so alike it's uncanny. And then their babies would make the most spastic mathy drum rock ever. It'll be great! "Steely" is one of my faves from the infinitely long This Is It.... It has a killer riff and the lyrics are so catchy. "Tell me your name! This is no accident!" ""I'm like a raging animation. I wonder what it's like to be one." "I'm hoping it's true! I'm hoping for you!" That whole chorus is nuts. I love it.



Hot Lava - Mummy Beach (from Lavalogy)

I posted the video for Hot Lava's "Brainex" about a month ago and while that song is super catchy, it can't compare to the sheer campy horror ridiculousness of "Mummy Beach." It's a song about a beach with mummies on it. "We got mummies at the beach. Mummies! We got mummies in the sand. Mummies! We got mummies in the souvenir shop. Why won't they stop? They'll never stop." The lyrics are amazing. Whatever songs you planned on writing about mummies? Forget about it. They'll never be cooler than this.

Hey, this song is pretty cool. Dancey electro club stuff. I can get my groove on to this. Wait... Is that..? Holy shit. He just sampled Duncan Sheik. And it's good? Bravo Rainbo Video. Bravo.

Circusbreaker - Objective Facts Concering Destruction

In my never-ending search for cool blogs, I found OngakuBaka, which happens to have pretty good taste in music and updates frequently (a rare thing, let me tell you). The writers, Dan and Steve, seem like regular dudes like me. Guys who listen to lots of music and like to write about it. But then there was a post about Circusbreaker and it turns out that's the name Dan records under. So a guy who writes for a blog I read makes music. Cool. The thing is, it's not shitty music. It's not even just halfway decent music. It's actually really fucking good. And I say that not because I was expecting it to be bad, but just because it came out of nowhere and took me completely by surprise.

Objective Facts Concerning Destruction would give a regular person a fucking migraine. It's loud-as-shit glitchy electronic dance noise. To start, think about "Total Recovery Is Possible" by Kid606. That song is genius because it starts out all crazy and chaotic and free-form, but then he slides this beat in and before you know it, it's the number 1 dance jam in America. So Circusbreaker makes music like that except he mixes in a ton of Lightning Bolt, Wolf Eyes, and Dev/Null.

"Each track is inspired by my favorite and most-played NES games of my childhood, and my current noisy interpretation of their gameplay." I'd say this is more along the lines of Millipede-type inspiration as opposed to The Advantage-type inspiration. Not much on here sounds inherently video-gamey, with the exception of being electronic based. Not that that's a problem. As with Millipede, just knowing that what I'm listening to was inspired by, say, Micro Machines or Bubble Bobble, is enough for me.

I've been listening to Objective Facts almost non stop since I downloaded it and it gets better with each listen. It satisfies so many moods at the same time. I get my glitch, noise, and dance fix all at once. And the best part? It's free!
