Petrels is making an album honoring this man. "Silt" is the first taste and it's a gorgeous bubbly drone with uplifting organs, shimmering & grand. It's the sound of an underwater hero. Can't wait to hear the full record, which is due out hopefully later this year.

Boston's gloomy post punkgazers Young Adults are back with a legit debut release, the limited Black Hole 12" on AMDISCS, and it's fucking GRAND. All the tracks from the demo earlier this year find their way onto Black Hole but they're way more lush, full force high quality tunes that sound 10x better now. "Wasting Time" is killer, a lethargy fueled anthem made for blasting your way through Contra.

Three fucking cheers to DJ Topcat because this mashup is INSANE. It's meshes so perfectly and honestly, I'm pretty sure we've all been waiting for an Eazy / Cash track. You wanna know how many times I hit play again as soon as it was over? TOO BAD. I lost count.

I'm not sure it's possible to be more self aware than this dude. But at least he's making some good tunes instead of writing a snarky blog full of hipster loathing. "I Lost My Corpse Paint" is nearly 9 minutes of synthy electro pop. Super heavy on the chiptunes (authentic or not is your guess), with a hearty mix of crisp beats & gritty blown out melodies. Sweet enough to put on your next dance party mix although I'll leave it up to you if you ever want to reveal to your friends that you enjoy music from a guy called Hipster Youth.

It looks like the 50 limited hand numbered CD-Rs are sold out. That means you should stream & download the whole album, Teenage Elders, at Bandcamp, highly recommended for song titles such as "Crying Outside Clubs," "Pop Song For Those With Short Attention Spans," and the ridiculously catchy "Super Fun Hipster Suicide Party."

The dude who runs the Pen & Mallet blog is also a music-maker as Aboombong, and a damn good one at that. He's got a few "name your price" albums up on Bandcamp, but "Daymare" is from my particular favorite, Asynchronic. It's a super lush muted free jazz/post rock workout, chaotic enough to blend everything together into a homogeneous blur of skittering drums & intense guitar noodling. Well worth your time, and I highly recommend checking out the rest of his stuff.

All blown out drum machine loops and sweet Casio melodies, this one's a fuckin dreamer, sights set on cruising with the windows down on mid July nights.

5 dudes from the Netherlands call themselves Nikoo and made a free 6 song EP of '60s psych pop/rock, shoegaze, punk, and whatever else. Most of the stuff is really fuckin good but OMG "Marquee" is like the catchiest song ever. Kinda blissful, gets in a solid groove, climaxes, and all in just over 2 minutes. Plus, I work at a sweet movie theater so I'm always having more fun at the marquee.

I've been listening to Nikoo pretty much non-stop for the past week. It's getting harder and harder for me to pull myself away from it and listen to something else. If you need more convincing, check the track "You've Got A Strange Effect On You" on their Myspace and then fuckin download the EP already.

I love Girlfriends oh so dearly, and after listening to their debut tape on repeat a hundred zillion times in my car for the past 4 months I really regret giving them a half-assed "list review" of their A+++ tape. So here's my chance to make up for that massive error.

Ampeater has put out another one of their world renowned digital 7 inches, this time with 2 "new" Girlfriends songs. The first is a revised version of the first track on their tape, "Good To Be True." It's cleaned up a bit, polished, and the alien theremin solo is missing. Not too different. But the other song is "The Day I Was A Horse." Yeah, it's a Vaselines cover!

It's short and sweet, with the female Girlfriend having to sing a bit more than usual (obviously). If you know the song and/or The Vaselines, you'll love Girlfriends having a go at it. If you're totally oblivious to The Vaselines, you'll still love it because it's a great fucking song and Girlfriends are the best.

P.S. They played this song at Blastfest III on Saturday. It was awesome.

Skywave was an awesomely awesome band. They sounded kinda like A Place To Bury Strangers. One of the dudes from Skywave went on to form A Place To Bury Strangers. Surprise! The other two made Ceremony. Ceremony also sounds like APTBS except less loud/more poppy. Really super cool stuff. Good enough to warrant a review perhaps without mentioning APTBS once.

"Someday" is echoey, catchy, distorted, rooted in the '80s, but still plenty loud and totally fucking rocking. It's the single off their next album Rocket Fire coming out on the Brainwashed affiliated Killer Pimp label (emphasis on the killer). The B side, "Cracked Sun," will only be available on the 7". So if you slicksters like to be completists and all, best get on that shit.

2. A Faulty Chromosome is possibly one of the greatest bands of all time.

3. You need to listen to more A Faulty Chromosome, regardless of how much you currently listen to them.

4. This song is brilliant. It starts with sprinklers and ends with fireworks and is catchy as fuck. The sprinklers stay through the whole song, making a sweet beat but the best part is, they pan channels. 'Cause that's exactly what a sprinkler does. Pans channels.

5. I wanted 5 things in my list.

P.S. They successfully raised enough money through Kickstarter to get a physical release for Craving To Be Coddled So We Feel Fake-Safe. WOOOO!!

Holy shit I have been listening to "Wisely Wasted" constantly for the entire week. It's fucking gorgeous. It's like if Citay made an IDM record. Just thick, lush, electronic psych that wraps it's warm bear paws around me and I just totally lose myself in it. The part around 3:30 where it stutters gets me every fucking time. I love this song so much. It's on Rothbard's (digital only) Exodusarabesque that came out back in February on Peaking Mandala. You should download it, like, now because it's fucking fantastic.
