Weird Stalk, Too Lineup Announced

Last year's 3 day Weirdstock festival thrown by the Whitehaus as a 40 year anniversary to the original Woodstock was a huge success, if not necessarily in the turnout, then in proving the fact that doing a 3 day DIY fest is totally in the realm of possibility.

AWESOME NEWS: the Whitehaus is bringing it back and they're calling in Weird Stalk, Too. The sad news is that instead of taking over the Cambridge YMCA for a whole weekend, it's going to be an all nighter at The Temple in JP. But that means lots of good things, too.

Like you don't have to take a whole weekend off to enjoy what's sure to be one of the coolest parties in Boston this year. And instead of feeling bad on missing half of the 40 bands like last year, you can make damn sure you see all of 'em this time. And it's not at The Y.

So the official lineup so far looks totally fucking rad. I'm super psyched about Kurt Weisman and Blevin Blectum, but there's also power drone fiend Double Awake, the self explanatory Metal & Glass Ensemble, California's chill creeper Dead Western, another one of Angela Sawyer's endless projects Preggy Peggy, circuit bending sound artist Omnivore, and plenty of Whitehaus mainstays like Many Mansions, Morgan Shaker, and Peace, Loving. And there's still more to be announced!

This shit is gonna be so so awesome.

The Show Calendar Returns!

First of all, my apologies for neglecting the show calendar on this incarnation of my site. If you're unaware, I've been scrambling to get my new site off the ground and have put most of my energy (show calendar-wise) on keeping the new calendar updated so that when my new site finally launches, that calendar will be nice and plump. But I figured since I'm using Google Calendar as the core, there's no reason I can't share it with you now and let you have access to all of my hard work of show compiling.

There's a couple of things that I've never explicitly said about the show calendar that I always thought would be semi-obvious, but I might as well get 'em off my chest now while I have the chance.

It's not comprehensive. At all. I do my best to catch all of the DIY & house shows before they happen, but living in Salem, a half hour outside of Boston, sometimes it's hard for me to stay in the loop. If you know of a show that you think me/AGB readers would be into and it's not on the calendar, please hit me up so I can spread the good word.

I haven't heard of all the bands that I list. Sometimes I'll put up a show where I haven't heard of a single band playing. That's rare, but it happens because it's going down at a super reputable place that I feel like I could just go to any show they're putting on and it will be awesome.

I'm going to try to update this as frequently as possible. Whenever I find out about a new show, it'll get posted.

He'll be doing percussion shit with Coleman on theremin and Kelley on trumpet. Guaranteed to be rad. Plus KFW is opening. Holy shit?

Barn Owl, JaJuNo Trio, Tom Plsek, Mystic Out-Bop Review at Griffen Theatre (Salem) (7:00, $10, all ages)
Guys! Cool shit is coming to Salem!! That means I don't have to drive or take the train to have fun and see awesome experimental music. This is the first show in the Sonorium music series (put on by the Qfwfq Duo) and they're making sure they're on the map right from the get go bringing fuckin Barn Owl to town. Plus JaJuNo trio is playing, who consists of James Coleman on theremin, Jules Vasylenko playing the saxophone, and Noell Dorsey "singing." I wrote about them when they played at The Piano Factory with Lord & Karhlheinz, and Audrey Chen & id m theftable. They were incredible. This show would be so fucking cool if it was in Boston, but it's in Salem, and that just makes it a hundred million times cooler. Can't wait to see what Sonorium's got up their sleeves for round two.

So much fun is going to be had at Blastfest 3. You have no idea. It's going to be like the epic party you always wanted to throw but never had enough friends to make it crazy enough. Well, everybody at Blastfest is your friend (true story) and that means THIS IS THAT PARTY. The music is going to be sosososo fantastic and, get this, FREE PB&Js!! Just don't be a glutton.

They'll be celebrating the release of The Whitehaus Family Record Family Record, a 2xLP compilation featuring a ton of the people playing Blastfest and then some. And there's not just music, there's also a zine fair put on by the inimitable Papercut Zine Library (who just found a new home in Somerville!), plus a comic jam (?). Yeah, this is going to be pretty grand.

The whole hootenanny goes down on March 20 at the Cambridge YMCA from 11-11 with a "sliding scale" of $5-10 for tickets. Meaning if you can swing it, and you should be able to swing it I mean they're giving away goddamn PB&Js you guys, then you should drop a tenner in the bucket.

Together Festival
If you haven't heard of this yet, you're living under a rock. Boston's got the biggest bestest electronic festival going down this week. Tons of awesomeness like DJ/Rupture, Sinden, Phantogram, and Neon Indian happening all over the place but there's 3 events I'm especially looking forward to. First is Tim Hecker, Mountains, and David Daniell at the Cambridge YMCA on Thursday. Then there's the FREE chiptune showcase on Friday at MassArt's Pozen Center with Animalstyle, Disasterpeace, Cathode Rays, Active Knowledge, Br1ght Pr1mate, and Radio Scotvoid DJing with visuals and lasers from VJ Beyonder. And finally there's the killer BOWAAC early (3pm) all ages Saturday show with Big Digits, Truman Peyote, Coralcola, Many Mansions, Wet Bandits (Ryan Durkin & Evaredy), and Dutty Artz for only 7 fucking dollars. Together Is Better Than BEMF

I went to The Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival last year and it was cool and all but not especially what I was hoping it would be. It was all dance music. Granted, there was all different types of shit to shake your cosmic thing at, but I'm not a 24 hour partier. And here is why Boston is better than Brooklyn.

Together: The New England Electronic Music Festival. Do you see that lineup? They got their shit covered. Tim fucking Hecker. Playing Boston. Plus, Keith Fullerton Whitman, Neon Indian, Phantogram, DJ/Rupture, AC Slater, Sinden, Udachi, plus a ton more not even announced yet.

There's drone, hipster shit, trip hop, super slick DJs, and tons of awesome dudes that make sure you have the best time possible. This is taking place all over Boston for an entire week in February.

Update: Mobius show not happening. :(
Aaaand I got some extra info about a specific show that's going to be top fucking notch. Brendan Murray, KFW & Geoff Mullen, and Max Lord will be playing at Mobius on the 10th. $$$ says that will contend with Tim Hecker for best show of the fest.

There's going to be tons more (100+ performers) plus a record fair, DJ classes, film screenings, and, well, you can read the bottom of the flyer. No word yet on cost of passes but here's hoping they're cheap. And if they're not? Fuck it. It'll totally be worth it anyway.

S.C.E.N.E. In Salem

S.C.E.N.E. = Salem's Chiptune, Electronica & Noise Extravaganza = all day electronic festival in Salem, MA coming Fall 2010 (that's twenty ten, not two thousand ten)

This Friday the 4th at 8pm, the FREE, all ages second promo fundraiser party for S.C.E.N.E. is going down at The Gulu Gulu in Salem, hosted/presented/organized by Radio Scotvoid and Moon Climb The Wall (both of whom will also be DJing in between sets all night). And the lineup for this is pretty fuckin sweet.

Active Knowledge's solid sweet 8bit goodness from the Cape, Bubblegum Octopus's WTF insanity from Jersey, and my personal favorite, circuit bender extraordinaire Computer At Sea from Portland (the East Coast one). Also opening up is Burlington's minimal Nuda Veritas doin her electro-acoustic thing.

Gulu might not be the first place you'd think of to check out some crazy 8bit shit, but they're super kind and brave enough to host something as cool as this. My only complaint is that there's hardly any room to get your groove on/rock/spazz out/be a total nerd if the spirit moved you because the "stage" is right next to tables. This is a restaurant after all and people want to sit, eat, and enjoy some good tunes. Maybe there will be more partiers and dancers this time. Who knows. Either way, this should be a great fuckin time and certainly worth coming out of Boston for.

Baba Yaga are the local chill folk female duo with enchanting vocals, occasionally using, among other things, a mandolin and harmonium. Yeah! The Glass Shivers will conjure space dreams while JP's Architecture Of The Sun throws some magical old fashioned projections on the walls.

Killer local noise show. Cowards are Nick Pace (from Diaphragm) and Jesse Allen (from Cathode Terror Secretion) and they play some serious drone noise. Karlheinz destroys everything he touches with his ferocity. Sharpwaist is just fucking brutal. Moldof & Stelzer is going to be a supremely unique experience, with Stelzer messing with his tapes and Moldof fucking around with his crazy guitar stuff. And Double Awake just has some of the best power drone in town. This show is going to be fucking amazing.

Doing the math, I expected to be pretty ambivalent about Former Ghosts but somehow their album Fleurs is fucking fantastic. Love it. But I'm pretty sure Roza's not going to be playing with them live, so...

And Ophibre, well, if you read this blog and don't know who he is, then you're not reading this blog. I love that man. Everything he touches is gold.

Craig Colorusso's Sun Boxes at Important Records (FRREEEEE, noon-dusk, all ages)
Colorusso will be installing a mess of huge solar powered speakers, each with a different guitar loop playing through it. The idea is that it will sound different wherever and whenever you stand, due to the angle and placement of the speakers and that each loop is a different length, so at no time will the whole thing repeat itself. It runs from noon until sundown, because obviously the speakers won't be able to continue playing once they lose power. Anyway, this sounds so fucking cool. Not very accessible without a car though, so if you're going through Salem on your way to this, pick me the fuck up and we can have a good time. I promise good company and maybe I'll buy you lunch or something. I just have to be back to work around 5ish. Deal?

Ricardo is the man behind Semata, plays in Perispirit with Moldof, drums in Ehnahre, and runs all the shows at The Piano Factory. Apparently he'll be doing something slightly different for this show. And Ouest is the supergroup of Howard Stelzer, Brendan Murray, and Jay Sullivan making, you guessed it, wonderful drone. There's only one reason you shouldn't be going to this and that's if you're going to...

I saw The Besnard Lakes at TT's last time they came around but only because I tried to see Dan Deacon at The Middle East Upstairs and it was sold out. But it worked out better that way because I've seen Deacon a couple times since whereas The Besnard Lakes have been pretty quiet. They're amazing live, though. And I'm sure they'll be playing a bunch of new stuff. And with Thalia Zedek opening, this'll be a great show.

SubArachnoid Space, OvO, Ehnahre, Double Awake at Great Scott ($9, 9:00, 18+)
There are some things I don't know about this show, but there are also some things I do know. Like, for instance, that Double Awake is playing. I know that even though it's not listed on Great Scott's site because Mr. Double Awake told me himself. So that's pretty fucking cool. I also know Ehnahre are awesome avant metal and Ricardo Donoso plays with 'em. I don't specifically know OvO or SubArachnoid Space but I do know that they're on Load and Crucial Blast (respectively) and both of those labels (CB especially) fucking rule. So this show is going to be loud and it's going to amazing. Similar to the Health/Pictureplane/Big Digits/Bearstronaut show at Harper's Ferry except less dancing. You should go to this one. It will be better.

MOOOOORE METAL. This show will be quite heavy on the metal, possibly also on the sucking. It has that potential, because 3 of the bands I've never seen. But Sewer Goddess is sure to bore black holes through your skull with disgusting industrial blackened noise shit. Even if you just go for Sewer Goddess, it will be $8 well spent.

You know a Big Bear show isn't going by unnoticed here. I will promote the shit out of them until the day I die. So go see them. Even if you've already seen them a dozen times, go again because they're that fucking good. Providence's Tinsel Teeth also (supposedly) put on a ridiculous live show with their nasty noise punkish ways. You Need New Glasses and Dead Cats Dead Rats are doing the CD release party thing and they'll both be playing their own post garage math punk stuff that is highly enjoyable. YNNG has a free album out now that you can (and should) go download.

There's so little published info on this show. Still, it seems like this is the lineup and it's definitely at 381 Congress St. So there's that. Not sure if Keir Neuringer and Skinny Vinny are collaborating or if they're playing separately. Also not sure about price, time, etc. But this show will be killer regardless of all those menial details. Skeletons Out fucking owns (Howared Stelzer & Jay Sullivan) and Keir Neuringer is a crazy electronic noise motherfucker. You might even get some droning saxophone. You never know.

This show is going to be so crazy. 100% awesome electronic acts doing all sorts of different stuff ranging from drum n bass to ambient and slick video artists givin you something sweet to look at while you party. Voidstar and Force Of Nature are putting this on so you know you're gonna have a good time. And fucking Xanopticon man! How can you even think about not going to this!?
